Four Fishing State Records Certified
LINCOLN, Neb. – Four more state-record fish have been certified by the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission this spring.
Alex Petersen of Burwell caught a 50-pound, 5-ounce common carp June 13 to set the archery record. He took the 40-inch fish at Dewey Lake on the Valentine National Wildlife Refuge.
Mark Schafer of Alliance set the surface spearfishing record for common carp. He landed a 34½-inch fish at Box Butte Reservoir on May 17. It weighed 23 pounds, 8 ounces.
Jacob Beals of Alliance set the hook-and-line record for European rudd with a 2-pound, 12-ounce catch. He used a leech to land the 15¾-inch fish at Box Butte Reservoir on April 30.
Brian Pankonin of Chadron used a Mepps spinner to set the hook-and-line record with a 5-pound, 14-ounce white sucker. The 24¼-inch fish was caught April 1 at Chadron City Reservoir South.
Carp-O-Rama Scheduled for June 26
LINCOLN, Neb. – Anglers interested in learning all aspects of carp fishing may attend Carp-O-Rama on Saturday, June 26 at Pawnee State Recreation Area (SRA), according to the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission.
The free event is from 8 a.m.-1 p.m. on the east side of the lake, near the boat ramp. Pawnee SRA is located 3 miles northwest of Emerald in Lancaster County. Loaner fishing poles will be available.
Carp is an excellent fish for beginning anglers to pursue because they are plentiful statewide, and the required equipment is relatively simple. The strong-fighting fish also is not restricted by bag, possession limits or size limits.
How-to carp fishing seminars by Commission fisheries outreach program manager Daryl Bauer will be held throughout the day. Carp caught by anglers will be used in demonstrations on cleaning, preparing and cooking the fish. The cooked fish then will be served as a free lunch. Prize drawings will be held for children age 15 and younger.
A park entry permit is required of all vehicles entering Pawnee SRA. A fishing license is required of anglers age 16 and older. Both permits may be purchased at the park.
